My mom was a high school music teacher, she was also a gifted vocalist. She passed away when I was five years old so I don’t know this story first hand (before my time)...but this is the way my family told it to me.
My mom would perform through her college years all across the Southern States. This one show, my mom was in front of thousands. She would sing her favorite song "Amazing Grace" The band started to play...while she was nervous never having been in front of this many people...she started to sing and sing like she never had before, absolute vocal perfection...she really loved that song, and she put every ounce of her heart into it. The song goes beautifully...she finished and...Not a sound...not one peep from the audience. My mom ran off the stage in tears thinking they hated the performance. What she didn’t know is that people were so taken by the performance they were crying...and so moved that they couldn’t move...
As my mom sat crying off stage...the crowd started to applaud which went on for ten minutes....a standing ovation...She later would say that was the greatest moment of her life, musically.
So, "Amazing Grace" has always been my favorite song, but I can’t get through singing it (live) because I think of that story.
